The Kumon Method:
Kumon is a systematic and methodical program with a number of elements that work together to help your child make meaningful and lasting progress toward realizing his or her full potential.
Kumon is "child-centric" learning.
Because the Kumon program has been developed to take full advantage of a child's own natural ability to learn and succeed, we refer to it as "child-centric" learning.
That means that every element of Kumon is designed to engage, enfranchise, and empower your child to the greatest extent possible in the learning process.
Kumon, more than perhaps any other method, makes your child the engine that drives the learning process forward. That's how the Kumon Method so effectively promotes learning independence and self-motivation, thereby opening the door to real advancement and ongoing achievement.
The Six Core Elements of Kumon:
- Rock-Solid Foundation: "I start where I really know my stuff." You've heard about the importance of a strong foundation. Taking pains not just to establish it - but to maintain it every step of the way - is something Kumon has down to a science. That's why your child starts at a level before any learning gaps whatsoever have crept in. From that comfortable starting point established by the Kumon Placement Test, he or she builds up layer upon secure layer. If your child complains that work is too easy, you know it's all part of the process of cementing a foundation that's rock-solid, and making sure it stays that way - with every level that he or she advances.
- Just-Right Pace: "I work at a pace that's just right for me." The most productive pace is neither too fast nor too slow. Your child's achievement with Kumon is never rushed or delayed but happens precisely when he or she is ready for it. Moving forward comfortably, confidently, and to the best of his or her ability, your child can take the time needed to work through concepts that may not come as easily, and more briskly through others that do. Progress is driven only by ability and initiative because your child's study plan is completely individualized to his or her strengths and needs. Your child is never constrained by school grade level or someone else's expectations.
- Small Steps Forward: "Each step is small enough so I can take it on my own." Kumon advances so logically and so gradually that your child can figure things out on his or her own. The curriculum is constructed in small, self-explanatory steps to provide all the support needed wherever it's needed. That way your child is able to work through all the material by doing instead of being taught how. Advancing in this way, your child masters computation and comprehension skills at every level. Kumon doesn't necessarily mirror your child's school curriculum because its aims are different, but it will help your child do better throughout school, in all subjects.
- Ironclad Mastery: "I have to really, really get it before I move ahead." What is mastery? It's doing something so naturally and effortlessly that you don't even have to think about how you did it. That's why we're sticklers about time as well as accuracy. With Kumon, your child must get everything right within a given period of time. It's not about forcing your child to work faster. It's about applying concepts until they become second nature, so he or she can work without struggle or hesitation. Our experience with millions of students tells us just how fast a child needs to get the answers to demonstrate that they're fully grasped and truly mastered.
- Self-Motivated Success: "I did it myself and I want to do more." Nothing is more rewarding than succeeding on your own. That's the whole idea behind Kumon. Your child is inspired to seek out the next challenge because he or she has conquered the last one. With each victory, your child builds confidence and self-reliance. Throughout the whole process, the Instructor works with your child to set his or her goals, providing even more incentive to meet them. That's how your child gains self-motivation and, ultimately, ownership of the learning process. We've found time and again that the more successful a child is, the further he or she is inclined - and able - to go.
- Daily Practice: "Doing a little every day keeps me on top of my game." Kumon requires doing something every day. It's how your child keeps his or her mind active, focused, and disciplined. Just 10-20 minutes or so goes a long way toward building stamina and fostering study habits that make your child more productive - and not just with Kumon. Learning to apply oneself in this way becomes a recipe for approaching all kinds of tasks more methodically and efficiently, so it actually creates time for other activities children thrive on. It doesn't happen overnight, but - with disciplined daily practice - it really does happen.
