What if you miss a class?

Everyone misses a class sooner or later. We either forget, traffic is bad, or practice runs late. Life happens.

If you know that your child will not be able to make their scheduled class day, you are welcome to come by the center as early as 11:00 AM on class day to trade out your child's completed homework for that week's class work and homework.

If you are not able to come by on class day it is not necessary to call us. Our policy for a student who misses class is to automatically put their class work and homework in the basket outside the Center's main entrance so that you can come by any time after the center closes that day to pick it up. The work will be left in the basket for a maximum of five days, after which it will be brought in to prepare for the next class.

Please be sure to put any completed homework through the mail slot on the door when you pick up the new work.

Corrections and Homegrading

It is crucial that parents provide a 10-15 minute block of time per subject for the completion and correction of daily Kumon assignments.

It is the job of the parents to ensure that assignments are timed, that errors are marked, and that mistakes are corrected by the student before beginning new work.

All parents are expected to homegrade their child's Kumon homework. Students whose parents homegrade make faster, smoother progress through the Kumon program because:

  • your child corrects their mistakes daily, thus learning from their mistakes and making fewer mistakes overall
  • your child repeats less
  • your child is more motivated because you are involved
  • you are more motivated because you know exactly what your child is doing

A basic tenet of the Kumon Method is that students learn from their mistakes. Kumon students are required to correct every mistake on every set they complete.

Students whose parents do not homegrade spend a great deal of time in class correcting mistakes from old homework before they can begin the classwork. This often leads to an extended stay at the center. Students are also required to correct all mistakes on their daily classwork, as well.

We provide Answer Books and a handy Parent's Guide to Homegrading to help you get started.

Incomplete Homework

Everyone has a crazy day from time to time. However, we need to be strict about homework completion.

In order for students to progress, we have to expect our students to come to class with all of their Kumon homework 100% complete, along with all mistakes corrected. In order to help students understand the importance of completing their homework every day, we may require a student who repeatedly comes to class with incomplete homework to complete all of the incomplete work at the Center before beginning the classwork for the day, as well as make all corrections.

If there are extenuating circumstances that have prevented your child from completing their work at home, please be sure to send in a note or give a call alerting us in advance that the homework has not been done. We will reschedule their work for them.

Achievement Test Awards

Passing an Achievement Test at the end of a level is the highest achievement a Kumon student can attain. Passing an Achievement Test indicates that a student has achieved mastery of the concepts in that level and has the skills necessary to handle the work in the next level.

Each student who passes an Achievement Test receives an Achievement Test certificate, an Achievement Test summary and a prize.

Please be sure to read the Achievement Test summary that will come home along with the Achievement Test certificate. This includes the student's score on the Achievement Test and a brief overview of the goals of the next level

Center Closures

Center closings are announced well in advance. We use all of the venues available to us to inform you of any schedule changes. Center closures are announced in the paper newsletter that is sent home each month, verbally when your child checks in and out of class the week before a closing, and on the website.

The Center follows the Lake Washington Public School holiday schedule. Please check the website, the newsletter, or with Center staff for information on specific dates that we will be closed.

Transferring from another Kumon Center to the Redmond Center

As with many Kumon Centers, the price you agree on at enrollment will be the price your family pays for Kumon while you remain enrolled at the Redmond Center. As an extension of this, if you transfer to us from another center without taking a break longer than 60 days, we will honor the price you were previously paying.

Please request your child's Kumon student ID number from their instructor to bring with you.

Tuition

Monthly tuition is due in advance. For example, May's monthly tuition is due before the end of April. We accept cash, checks or Visa and MasterCard automatic charges.  There is a $5 additional fee per month if paying by credit or debit card.

Our Kumon families are generally great about getting tuition payments in on time, and so we don't often have to talk about the late payment policy. FYI, the policy is:

  • Tuition is due on or before the first of the month
  • A $25 late fee will apply if tuition is not received before or on the first day of the month that payment is due (tuition postmarked on or before the 1st is not late)
  • A student may be absent, at no charge, without being discontinued as long as the student is not absent for more than two consecutive months
  • Paid tuition is non-refundable and is forfeited should a student discontinue enrollment or if work is taken at any time during the month
  • A 45-day written notice is required before leaving the program. Failure to give written notice 45 days in advance will result in the forfeiture of the last month's deposit. Your acount will be closed 45 days after we receive your notice to terminate. Your account will remain open and active until written notice is received.
  • In cases of medical or other emergencies where a 45-day notice is impossible to give, please call us and we will do what we can to accommodate your situation.
  • Tuition is pro-rated for the first month only according to the day of the month enrolled. Full tuition is charged for subsequent months until 45 days written notice is given to terminate enrollment.

Taking a Break

Over time, the skills and study habits a student has built through daily study will have weakened without daily practice. When students return to Kumon from an extended break, they will not restart where they had left the curriculum. The Instructor will determine their returning starting point of study. This returning starting point can be as much as half a level lower than the pre-break study level.  Please inform us in advance if you intend to take a break, so that we can plan ahead.  Please note that after a break of more than one calendar month per year, Kumon will consider the student unenrolled, and a registration fee must be paid upon return to the center.

Vacation and Holiday Packets

Planning and organizing work for your child takes a great deal of thought and organization. We require at least 1 day notice before any extended absence in order to put your child's vacation packet together.

During the holidays or in the summer, it is easy to let us know when you'll be gone and will need packets put together to cover your time away. You can fill out and submit the Vacation Schedule Form available at the front desk or in the waiting area, leave a phone message, e-mail and/or send in a note letting us know the last day your child will be in class and the day they will return to class so that we can organize the right amount of work for your child.

If we do not receive advance notice, we will try our best to put a packet together for you by the end of class that day and put it in the basket outside the front door.

Please let us know if you want your child to take a few days off, lessen the daily workload, or even increase the amount of work to be done over your vacation. However, if a parent requests extra work or an increase to the regular daily workload while on vacation, the work must be homegraded. Extra work will not be included into the student's lesson plan in the future if it has not been homegraded by the parent while on vacation.

Termination Policy

If a student is going to drop out of a class, either temporarily or indefinitely, a written notice is required at least 45 days before the effective date. Failure to receive such notice will result in continued charges to your account. Your account will remain open and active until written notice is received. Your account will be closed 45 days after we receive your notice to terminate.

Tuition is pro-rated for the first month only according to the day of the month enrolled. Full tuition is charged for all subsequent months until 45 days written notice is given to terminate enrollment.

Paid tuition is non-refundable and is forfeited should a student discontinue enrollment. In cases of medical or other emergencies where a 45-day notice is impossible to give, please call us and we will do what we can to accommodate your situation.
