What Happens at Kumon

When you take your child to the Kumon Center, he or she follows a simple routine that usually takes about 15-30 minutes per subject, depending on his or her age and level.

Handing in Kumon Homework

Upon arrival, your child hands the Assistant at the front desk the Worksheets completed at home since his or her last visit to the Center so the results can be recorded.  Kumon Instructors keep a comprehensive record of all work completed.

Collecting the Kumon Plastic Folder

The Assistant at the front desk will hand your child his or her plastic folder.  The plastics are filled in advance with the Worksheets to be completed that afternoon at the Center and homework to be completed by the following week's visit.  The homework will be placed in your child's Kumon pouch by the front desk Assistant, and your child will then take the plastic to a desk to begin the day's assignment.  Other children are likely to be already at work.

Completing Assigned Worksheets

Kumon does not replicate a classroom model, so children come and go as they complete their assignments on their own and at their own pace.  On any given day, your child is likely to be working on material that no one else has been assigned, because the program is completely individualized.  Assistants are available at each table to guide children when they need it.

Grading and Feedback

Worksheets are graded immediately by an Assistant after the child completes them and handed back to the child so that he or she can make corrections.  With the work fresh in mind, the child meets with the Instructor to review corrections and discuss his or her progress.  The process of feedback and goal-setting between Instructor and student is vital to meeting the unique needs of the student.

The other five days a week, Kumon assignments must be completed at home and parents are asked to grade them.  This work is just as important as what takes place at the Center.
